The ICANN Board was given a serious and stark reality check warning about serious and escalating challenges and threats to its relevance, role and authority in the emerging New World Order evolving today, and the Politics & Geopolitics midfields it must walk to prevent and mitigate these perilous threats and challenges. Since its creation in 1998 as a California non-profit corporation, ICANN has been the sole authority of the names and numbers of the global internet. It was originally given this role by the US government the creator of the internet project which was originally a military defense project with a handful of US universities.
